What Does 'Lutheran' Mean at St. Paul's?

St. Paul's is a Lutheran school — a Christian school in the Lutheran tradition, operated by St. Paul's Lutheran Church, whose congregation has worshipped on Stewart Avenue since 1821. 'Lutheran' means we teach the Bible as God's Word, and at its center the good news that people are made right with God by his grace, through faith in Jesus Christ — a gift received, not a grade earned.

Our church belongs to the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a national Lutheran church body whose congregations operate one of the largest Christian school systems in America — hundreds of schools built on a simple conviction: children should be educated in a faith that is taught openly, carefully, and consistently.

What does that look like day to day? A Bible lesson and devotion each school day, chapel each week, and religion class as a normal part of the schedule — taught straightforwardly, the same faith our church confesses on Sunday. New families also take our Bible Basics course during their first year, so parents know exactly what their children are learning and can ask us anything.

Most of our students are not Lutheran. Many come from other Christian churches, and some from no church background at all. Families choose St. Paul's for the teaching, the small classes, and a school that is honest about what it believes. You will never be surprised by what your child is taught here.

The best way to judge a school's faith is to watch it in action on an ordinary day. Come take a tour.
